When these tubes are exposed to extreme temperatures, it can cause discomfort. <\/li><li><strong>Grinding teeth.<\/strong> Teeth grinding, in particular uncontrollable grinding while sleeping, can wear down enamel over time. This can expose the dentin, or the middle layer of the tooth containing the tubes that lead to your nerves.<\/li><li><strong>Using too much mouthwash. <\/strong>Some over-the-counter mouthwashes contain alcohol, which can make teeth more sensitive, especially if your dentin is exposed. <\/li><li><strong>Having excessive plaque.<\/strong> Not flossing and brushing can cause plaque to build up and wear away the enamel. <\/li><li><strong>Eating and drinking acidic foods and beverages. <\/strong>Sugary or processed food and drinks contain a high level of acidity, which erodes the outer layer of your tooth much more quickly than non-acidic foods. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Your Dentist Treat Sensitive Teeth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking to your dentist is the first step in reducing your tooth pain. He or she can examine your mouth and decide which treatment option would be best for you. Some include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth<\/li><li>Fluoride gel <\/li><li>Sealants <\/li><li>Fillings that cover exposed roots <\/li><li>Mouthguard to protect teeth if you grind <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In serious cases, your dentist might suggest a root canal.\nThat\u2019s why it\u2019s best to report any tooth pain before you have to resort to such\nan extensive procedure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Treat Sensitive Teeth at Home? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a few additional small things you can do at home\nto help alleviate dental discomfort, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gently use a soft or ultra-soft bristled\ntoothbrush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.<\/li><li>Floss once a day. <\/li><li>Limit alcohol intake.<\/li><li>Limit smoking. <\/li><li>After ingesting an acidic food or drink, drink\nwater to balance the acid levels in your mouth.<\/li><li>Schedule a regular dental appointment every six\nmonths. Call more often if your sensitivity persists. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tooth sensitivity, if left untreated, can often lead to much\nworse problems down the road.
