As you shuffle to your medicine cabinet,\nyou probably know the side effects of your go-to cold remedies, but do you know\nhow they impact your mouth? Some popular treatments can stain your teeth,\nincrease your risk of cavities, and make gum disease worse. You could be\nharming your oral health as you treat your cold! Follow these flu season tips to\nkeep you healthy and your teeth happy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sip Tea and Juice Through Straws<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what you\u2019ve come down with, it\u2019s always important\nto stay hydrated. Drinking a cup of hot tea or glass of orange juice can help\nyou feel better faster. The Vitamin C packed into orange juice can give your\nimmune system a powerful boost, and hot tea is known for soothing sore,\nscratchy throats. Unfortunately, they both weaken enamel and cause\ndiscoloration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can you enjoy their benefits without staining your\nteeth? To protect your enamel, try drinking through a straw or chasing it down\nwith a refreshing sip of water. Be sure that you\u2019re brushing your teeth\nregularly too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stick with Sugar-Free Cough Drops and Syrups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cough drops and syrups come in a wide buffet of flavors, including\nwatermelon, cinnamon, mint, and everything in between. While it may make the\ntaste more appealing, these flavors can also drastically increase your risk of\ncavities with their high sugar content. These sugars coat your mouth and\naccumulate between your teeth and under your gums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, keep your teeth safe by trying sugar-free options,\nwhich come in a variety of flavors as well. You can also rinse your mouth out\nwith water after taking these medicines or use gel capsule alternatives if they\nare available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay Hydrated When Using Decongestants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of us take breathing through our nose for granted\nuntil we become sick. Decongestants work on drying the sinuses to clear up a\nrunny or stuffed up nose. This can also unfortunately interfere with the\nproduction of your saliva. A dry mouth is the perfect place for bacteria to\ngrow quickly and contribute to any infections, spreading gum disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if you don\u2019t take decongestants, you\u2019ll likely end\nup with a dry mouth too! They best thing you can do is to stay hydrated.
