Sometimes in life, even if you have good intentions, your busy schedule gets in the way of the things you need to do to stay healthy. If it\u2019s been a long time since you\u2019ve been to the dentist, you\u2019re not alone. In fact, according to National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 2019, 35 percent of adults did not go to the dentist the previous year. If it\u2019s been a while since your last dental exam and cleaning<\/a>, it\u2019s never too late to return, and in case you\u2019re nervous, here\u2019s what you can expect to happen the next time you sit down in the dental chair!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Arrival & Check-In<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you first arrive at your dental appointment, be sure to introduce yourself at the front desk. There, the office team will welcome you to the practice and collect any information necessary for your appointment, such as a copy of your driver’s license and insurance card. They may also need you to fill out or sign paperwork, or pay a co-pay, so be sure to show up about 15 minutes early to allow yourself time to check in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Next, your teeth will be given the royal treatment in the form of an extended cleaning. Depending on how long it\u2019s been since you\u2019ve last had a dental exam, you may have a lot of plaque built up and this step could take longer than you\u2019re used to. Your patience will pay off, though, because when it\u2019s done, your teeth will look and feel fantastic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

X-Rays or Imaging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Next, your dental team will take some images of your teeth and jaw. This is to help your dentist get a more detailed look at your overall oral health. These images can spot problems like cavities and tooth infections much faster than your dentist could with the naked eye alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oral Examination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once your images are ready, your dentist will review them and then conduct an in-person oral examination. Here, he or she will take a closer look at any trouble spots flagged on your images, as well as screen for oral cancer and check the condition of your gums. If everything looks good, you will be sent to check out where you\u2019ll be given the opportunity to schedule your next six-month check-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have any dental issues present, your team will go over your treatment plan (including the estimated cost) and assist you in booking your appointment for it. In some cases, your dentist may be able to complete minor procedures such as a small filling during your check-up; however, this is not always possible, so it may be necessary to return on another day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, although some time may have passed between your last appointment, the good news is that you\u2019re always welcome at the dentist\u2019s office!
