Why are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

If you are diligent about taking care of your teeth at home, you might think that you only need to schedule an exam when something is wrong, like you have a toothache. The reality is that warning signs of oral cancer, tooth decay, and gum disease can be difficult to detect, even if you frequently look underneath your tongue, on the roof of your mouth, and at the back of your throat. That’s one of the many reasons why it’s so important that you come in every six months (or sooner, if instructed otherwise) for an exam.

What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

Your dental exam will be with one of our approachable, experienced, and caring dentists in Carlisle. First, they will introduce themselves (or catch up with you, if you’re a long-time patient), and ask if you’ve been experiencing anything out of the usual. Then, they will take a look at your X-rays, complete a visual exam, and conduct an oral cancer screening. They’ll review their findings and, if anything stands out, they will share their recommendations for the next best steps.

Your dental cleaning is equally as important. At this time, we will use the special tools we have at our office to gently and meticulously remove food particles, plaque, and tartar from your teeth. If we notice that there is a certain area of your mouth that needs a bit more attention, we will let you know and give you some helpful tips on how to improve your at-home oral hygiene regimen. We’ll also floss and polish your teeth so you leave our office with a revitalized smile!
