A Bite-Sized History: How Dentures Evolved from Ancient Times to Today

When you hear the word “dentures,” your mind might jump to stories of George Washington and his famous wooden teeth. But the truth is, dentures have (thankfully) come a long way! What once were awkward, uncomfortable prosthetics are now custom-fitted, lifelike, and surprisingly high-tech. Keep reading to take a look back in time to see how dentures have evolved and why today’s prosthetic options are better than ever.

The Ancient Solutions of the Etruscans

Believe it or not, dentures date back thousands of years. Early cultures, including the Etruscans in ancient Italy, used human or animal teeth tied together with gold wire. These primitive dentures weren’t exactly comfortable (or functional), but they got the job done for people who needed a full smile.

The Wooden Myth

The myth of George Washington’s wooden teeth isn’t entirely true. His dentures were actually made from hippopotamus ivory, metal, and donated teeth from horses and donkeys.

That being said, earlier versions of dentures did incorporate wood! For example, in Japan during the 1500s, wood was carved and polished to resemble real teeth. Unfortunately, they weren’t very comfortable or durable.

The Invention of Porcelain Prosthetics

In the 1800s, porcelain teeth became popular. These were more realistic but prone to chipping. Around the same time, vulcanite rubber was discovered and scaled so it could be used as a base material for dentures. This made the prosthetics more affordable and easier to shape for the wearer’s mouth, increasing accessibility overall.

The New Age of Dentures

Modern denture prosthetics are lightyears ahead of their early ancestors. Today’s versions use medical-grade acrylic or resin to mimic the appearance of natural gums and teeth. They’re carefully sculpted, colored, and fitted to match your smile and fit your bite.

In addition, options like implant dentures are changing the game again, offering patients a more permanent and comfortable way to restore their smiles.

The Takeaway

Whether you need full dentures, partials, or just want to explore your options, it’s comforting to know you’re benefiting from centuries of innovation. Modern denture appliances look nicer, feel better, and last longer than ever before (with no animal teeth in sight).

If you’re considering dentures or just curious about the options available today, your dental team can help. You don’t have to settle for outdated solutions or uncomfortable fittings. Call your dentist and schedule a consultation. You could be the next chapter in this bit-sized history.
